Let’s face it. Today’s prospective clients are more time strapped, distracted, skeptical, and overwhelmed than ever. During prospect conversations you, as a financial advisor,  may find yourself feeling hurried to rush and quickly share all the value you bring, hoping it will “click” for your prospect. But here’s the truth:

The key to better conversions isn’t moving faster…it’s slowing down.

The rush can lead to many advisors unknowingly shortcutting the most critical part of the sales process: genuine human connection. That’s where trust is built. That’s where decisions are made. And that’s where one simple shift, being fully present, can turn a scattered conversation into a confident commitment.

Let’s look closer at how slowing down can actually speed up your results.

The High Cost of Rushing Through Conversations

You’ve likely been there: You’ve prepared well, walked your prospect through your process, explained your fees, and shared how you’ve helped others. But at the end of the conversation, they still hesitate, or worse, ghost you entirely.

In recent workshopsI’ve facilitated with advisors, a consistent theme emerged: conversions stall when conversations become mechanical. Speed and distraction are the culprits.

And in today’s high-stimulus world, that makes sense. One study found that up to 96% of the daily stimuli we encounter are negative. That means the small, positive human moments, eye contact, a genuine pause, a thoughtful response, are more powerful than ever in building trust.

The One Shift That Changes Everything: Be Present

Being present in your sales conversations isn’t just a “nice to have.” It’s the foundation of a collaborative experience that helps your prospect feel safe, seen, and supported.

To bring more presence into your conversations, focus on three simple but powerful actions:

1. Listen Beyond the Words

When a prospect answers a question, resist the urge to jump to your next point. Pause. Let their words settle. Then, ask: “That’s helpful. Please tell me more about what’s behind that.” or: “Interesting, please go on…”

This slows the pace and opens the door to deeper insights—critical for understanding their true goals and concerns.

2. Validate and Reflect

Paraphrase back key themes or statements. Not just to confirm what you heard, but to allow your prospect to feel understood. “It sounds like peace of mind around your budget is a big priority for you as you approach retirement.”

That acknowledgment builds safety and safety builds trust.

3. Connect Their Story to Your Solution

Instead of jumping into your recommendations one-by-one, center them around what they’ve shared and ask for more context. “You mentioned uncertainty around long-term care which is one of the areas we will make recommendations on—what’s weighing on you there?”

These kinds of connectors and additional questions move the conversation from transactional to transformational.

How to Make Presence a Habit in Your Advisory Practice

Unlike a robo-advisor or a DIY tool, you personally bring more than strategies. You bring clarity, empathy, and support. Here’s how to build it into your rhythm:

  • Prepare with intention. Eliminate distractions before meetings. Review your notes. Center yourself with a few deep breaths.
  • Set realistic pacing. Don’t cram too much into one meeting. Leave room for reflection and dialogue.

Avoid “check-the-box” conversations. Tailor your questions and flow to each prospect’s unique needs and energy. And flex real-time!

Final Thoughts: Slower is Smoother. Smoother is Faster

When you slow down to connect more purposefully, your conversations become more efficient, not less. Prospects feel heard. You gain better insight. Follow-ups are clearer. Objections are fewer. And trust builds faster.

The irony? Slowing down is what helps you close more efficiently.

If your conversations are missing the mark, don’t add more information. Add more connection. Be present. And watch your conversion rates rise, not through pressure but through partnership.
