Universal People Principles
I recently completed two European trips to work with a client’s sales
professionals. What an honor to work with 65 people from 14 different
countries during August and September! The learning that took place, for
them and me, was tremendous!
As participants shared with me the nuances of their cultures
(from Scotland through Turkey), I found that we have much more
in common than not. Some of the most important things they
stated were reminders of good facilitation practices and human
dynamics for me.
These Universal People
Principles may be helpful and timely reminders to you as
well.
People…
- Are people –
no matter what their ethnicity.
- Want to be heard.
People need to “talk”, ask questions and give feedback
during.
- Need to be seen as
individuals. Specific opportunities to personalize
information and find a way to make it work for them will pay
off.
- Need to know they
are cared for. You’ve probably heard that “people
won’t care what you know until they know you care”.
- Work well with
deadlines. Giving time limits to discussions and
activities, does keep the momentum and energy going.
- Like to have fun.
The groups that have more fun, learn more!
- Don’t need as much
food as we think. The culture in Europe does not have
“snacks” throughout the day. A good breakfast, hearty lunch
and late dinner and they are fine (with very little obesity,
that I saw). When they are busy, learning and applying
information, they don’t need so many snacks!
- Can overcomplicate
simple things. If we can keep ideas simple, people
will add the depth.
Which of these have you possibly stopped paying attention to
in your meetings or training sessions? Many of these items are
ones that “work so well, we stop doing them”. By ensuring all of
these are paid attention to, we can ensure the highest level of
reception and results!
We hear so much about
diversity, isn’t it good to know that the principles of good
communication, facilitation and learning needs are universal?
