Building Blocks
Building an organization that breeds
associate loyalty takes effort. Leaders (at all levels)
who focus on building the people are a rare commodity.
Fortunately, a person doesn’t have to
have a title to be in a position to build other people.
There are many, many individuals who
make a positive impact on others each day.
Think for a moment, who has helped you:
-
Believe you can achieve more than
you thought?
-
See possibilities you didn’t know
existed?
-
Asked you thought-provoking
questions, that at times made you
uncomfortable, and in the long-run made you glad they were asked?
-
Challenged you to stretch your
beliefs, activities, goals?
-
How have these beliefs and actions
impacted you?
That person, whether they know it or
not, has been an influence for you. You can call them a coach, tutor,
mentor or trusted advisor, or hero, it doesn’t matter what the title is.
They assisted you in building some beliefs, confidence or skills.
Most people will find that they can only
name a handful of people who have influenced
them in this way. The opportunity for you to become that person to
others is limitless!
If you’d like to make a different for
others, decide:
-
Who can I build? Is it a direct
report, a manager, another associate, a
colleague, a family member or friend?
-
How can I help build their beliefs,
attitudes, confidence or skills?
Some tips:
-
Find positives and point them out
-
Ask them questions about their
goals, obstacles and dreams
-
Acknowledge hard work
-
Celebrate small successes – it will
energize everyone!
As you consider whom you can mentor,
take a few minutes to let the person who has
influenced you know how they have impacted you. Make a phone call, send
an e-mail, or better yet, put a handwritten note or card in the mail so
they can treasure the message.
Then, begin laying building blocks for
others.
